Mach II Release Date

  • The Mach II should be out by the end of August, but we don’t yet have a concrete date and of course, Murphy’s Law means things can pop up so its hard to be precise. All going well, it will be available in August. So, for now, the Pro is the system of choice. And, though not as flashy as the Mach II, it’s still a great system and we have over 1000 over the world taking photos and being used well.

Free trial

To people who are interested not just in one unit for one job, but are interested in growing a business with multiple units, we offer a free one month trial. We recommend that you make use of the trial when you have a client who’s keen to see the service. You could offer it to your client for free for one month, and then at the end of the one month, if you and your client like the equipment then you can purchase it. If you don’t want it, then the only cost to you is the shipping back to our office. We understand that $5000 is a lot of money to put down on equipment you haven’t used before, so the free trial helps with that.

One final check

Just checking one final time to see if there is any life left in this deal?

If not, I’ll close it until you come back to us.

Did you get any response from your proposed project?

PRICE: Beast housing
[INTERNATIONAL] The full photoSentinel Pro kit with The Beast housing is US$5795. [AUS] The full photoSentinel Pro kit with The Beast housing is $5749 (ex. GST).
PRICE: Housing Only

We do sell the housing on its own. It is US$1295, plus shipping. We do quite a bit of customisation to housing, so the price includes:

  • B270 optically pure glass
  • Visor
  • Carry handle
  • Pressure equalisation plug
  • Pan and tilt bracket
  • Ball head
  • XY adjustment  plate

If you give me a shipping address, I can get a quote on the shipping for you.

PRICE: Can I buy/how much for the controller/ intervalometer only?

For reasons outlined below, we don’t sell the controller only, but we do sell a component kit for $3295. It is comprised of the following:

  • photoSentinel Pro micro-controller (intervalometer)
  • Camera power and trigger cable
  • Lithium ion battery
  • 3G antenna
  • Power harness and cable to connect to solar panel
  • Shipping included

The kit can’t be stripped down smaller than that (i.e. to just the intervalometer) for a number of reasons:

  • The controller is a single all-in-one unit that includes the intervalometer, camera power source,  recharging circuit and 3G modem
  • We have tested our system extensively with our batteries and we avoid warranty confusion by not allowing people to use other, potentially problematic, batteries

We would also provide schematics for you to wire your own solar panel, though you would need to double check with our engineers first that it is compatible. Alternatively, we can provide a 20W solar panel with the order for an additional $500.

The one warning we give with component systems is that we obviously can’t warranty any fault caused by your equipment. If your housing leaks and damages the equipment or if you wire the solar panel wrong and blow up a circuit board, that obviously won’t be covered.

There is an ongoing US$50/month/unit service fee that covers all server activity (photo storage, web gallery and online configuration portal), and you would need to source a 3G data plan and SIM card from a network provider.

Camera questions

CAMERA: What camera settings do you recommend?

Here are the settings I would suggest for the DSLR camera:

  • Aperture priority mode, aperture at f11
  • Manual focus
  • ISO: auto OR 200 (if there’s not option for auto)
  • White balance: direct sunlight
  • Image quality: fine
  • Image size: medium
  • Active D-Light: Off
  • Noise reduction: Off
  • Metering: Matrix
CAMERA: Can I control the camera online/remotely?
Currently, the photoSentinel controller only powers and triggers the camera. We’re working on a new system that opens the option to add camera control down the track, but it’s not something we can do just yet. That said, unless you’re bulb-ramping a sunset, with time-lapse you want static camera settings anyway. With long term time-lapse we recommend putting the camera in aperture priority (because the light will vary so much over time) and then ‘set & forget’. Unless something hasn’t been set right in the first place, there’s unlikely to be any need to change camera settings.
CAMERA: What's the best/recommended camera/lens?
The two most common cameras used with the photoSentinel Pro are the entry-level DSLRs, specifically the Nikon D3100/D3200 and Canon 500D-700D (aka T2i-T5i) series. These cameras account for over 75% of all cameras used by photographers in our Pro system, and are also the cameras we have done the most testing with. With one of these cameras and a Sigma 10-20m wide-angle lens, you get great DSLR pictures without locking up thousands of dollars worth of equipment in a box for months/years on end. If you are wanting to shoot raw photos, we recommend the Nikon D7000/D7100 (again with the Sigma 10-20mm lens). The dual slots in this camera allow you to save the raw photos to a large SD card in one slot, while sending JPEGs over the 3G network using the other SD slot. You will need to collect the raw photos manually, but if you use a large enough card you shouldn’t have to do this too often.
CAMERA: Will it work with X camera/lens?
RAW PHOTOS: Can I shoot/upload raw photos?
The photoSentinel system saves photos to a supplied 32GB (can’t be bigger – larger cards are a different format) microSD card in the photoSentinel controller. You can use this SD card just like you would an SD card in the camera – so, you can save both raw and jpegs to it. The obvious problem is that at 32GB, the card is going get full of the large raw files quicker than a much bigger card. You can shoot raw and jpeg, but the system will only upload the jpegs, meaning you’ll have to go and get the raw files manually off the SD card in the photoSentinel. Our system will tell you remotely what the space is on the SD card, so you’ll know when the card will be full. The best solution for shooting raw is to use a dual slot camera. Unfortunately Canon don’t do one cheaper than the 7D mk2, but Nikon do a reasonably priced one in the D7200. With dual slot, you can put a huge card in one slot and save all your raw files to it, and then use the second slot to link to our controller to capture and upload jpegs. With a 128GB card in the second slot, you’re not going to have to go back often to download the raws.
REGIME: What photo regime do you recommend?

Motion Time-lapse

  • Long term Timelapse often has periods you wish to cut out due it inactivity, rain, light, poor photo periods etc, and if you are actually moving the camera this cant be removed
  • Due to the quality of the photos taken, you can get a reasonably similar effect in post-production by zooming and panning.
Sony cameras
At this stage we do not recommend the use of Sony cameras with the photoSentinel system. The reason for this is that although they work with our system, they need a lot of power to keep the internal clock battery full. The photoSentinel system works on using as little power as possible, so we cannot guarantee the internal clock battery will always be full. It may tun out after a few months, or it might keep working, but unless we test the camera for 12 months, we can’t say. It’s a common problem for mirrorless cameras, unfortunately. If the unit is close to home and easy to access, you might be willing to take the risk. However, if the unit would be hard to access, we recommend sticking with Nikon and Canon DSLRs, which have proven themselves.

Software

3G/4G: Can I use it without 3G/monthly service fees?
The photoSentinel has been designed to work best with cellular connectivity – the unit receives the configuration and sends photo and status reports over the 3G/4G network. Without connectivity the features are severely limited; for example, we can’t help troubleshoot the equipment remotely with the status updates. That said, the configuration can be loaded directly onto the controller via the SD card, and it can be used without 3G, we just don’t recommend it. [OPTIONAL]: If you’re looking for a non-3G solution (i.e. just long term power, weatherproofing and intervalometer), we recommend Harbortonics equipment: www.harbortronics.com.
3G/4G: Can I use Verizon instead of AT&T?
Unfortunately, Verizon uses its own unique cellular technology that’s different from the international standard. The photoSentinel uses UMTS technology which is compatible with the AT&T network. We’re also AT&T partners which allows us to provide SIM cards that we know will work first time (saves you and us lots of headache trying to set up a strange SIM card).
3G/4G: How long does it take to upload a photo?
Upload time depends on a range of factors: 3G reception and bandwidth, and the size of the photo file. As a general rule, we recommend allowing for at least five minutes to upload each photo. If you want to shoot photos more frequently than every five minutes, or if the bandwidth/reception is particularly bad during the day (because everyone is using the network), the photoSentinel can also be configured to upload photos overnight when it’s not shooting and when there is usually more bandwidth available.
3G/4G: What options do I have for a site with no 3G/4G access?
The photoSentinel has been designed to work best with cellular connectivity – the unit receives the configuration and sends photo and status reports over the 3G/4G network. Without connectivity the features are severely limited; for example, we can’t help troubleshoot the equipment remotely with the status updates. That said, the configuration can be loaded directly onto the controller via the SD card, and it can be used without 3G. Just keep in mind that there’s no remote way to tell if the equipment is working or not. We’re also currently working on both WIFI capabilities and a proprietary wireless ‘mesh’ network, which we’re hoping to have ready in the next few months. When is is the start date for your project? Perhaps one of these options will be ready in time. [OPTIONAL]: If you’re looking for a non-3G solution (i.e. just long term power, weatherproofing and intervalometer), we recommend Harbortonics equipment: www.harbortronics.com.
3G/4G: Will it work with my country's 3G network?
[OPTIONAL] We have units operating in X COUNTRY already, so we know the system works on your networks. We use an international modem which works with all UMTS 3G/4G network frequencies around the world.
Can I run the interface directly on my server?
The photoSentinel system operates through the centralised photoSentinel server to ensure our technical support team has full diagnostic information to help troubleshoot any issues. Without this information, we would not know what is happening with the equipment and so could not provide technical support. We are committed to providing technical support of the highest standard, and to achieve this, all systems through our server.
What happens if you go out of business?

Yes, I understand it is a bit scary to rely on our servers! Let me try to allay your fears.

Firstly, we are not a small, high-risk company. We have been running photoSentinel for five years now and have well over 1000 cameras around the world. We also do not rely only on photoSentinel, but we have other revenue streams and are growing rapidly. So, there is not a high risk that we will go out of business.

Secondly, we know that hundreds of people around the world rely on us for their business. If something terrible were to happen to our business, we would certainly look at ways of making sure we provided a workable solution to all our customers moving forward. We are very committed to not destroying everyone’s businesses!

Of course, we don’t know what the future holds, but you have our guarantee that if something did go wrong, we would work out a solution.

Hardware

MINI: What size are the photos?
The FujiFilm XA-1 has a 16MP APS-C sensor and shoots photos up to 4896 x 3264 (more than large enough for 4K footage). The standard setting on the photoSentinel Mini is for photos that are 3456 x 2304 and about 2MB in size. When we first put the FujiFilm XA1 into the Mini we were pleasantly surprised by the quality of photo it captures – it takes a really great shot!
MINI: What's the angle/field of view?
The APS-C sensor with the 16mm lens gives a 70 degree horizontal angle of view. For comparison,  the 10mm lens you could put on a DSLR (with CMOS sensor) in the Pro system would give you a 90 degree horizontal angle of view.
Longest System
The longest running photoSentinel unit began in November 2011 and is still going.

Payments, Shipping & Tax

SHIPPING: How long will it take to get to X?
We ship with DHL Express which usually takes 3-5 days anywhere in the world. Of course, we have no control over how long customs takes to clear it in X COUNTRY, but it’s our experience that deliveries are pretty fast.
SHIPPING: How much is shipping?
[PURCHASE] Worldwide shipping is included in purchase price of the photoSentinel. [RENTAL] Shipping to X COUNTRY would be $[see below or DHL rate quote plus 30%]. To return the equipment at the end of the rental period, you can either arrange your own shipping, or you can use our DHL account and we will invoice you.

TAX/DUTY: How much tax/import duty will I have to pay?
[FOR USA] The good news is that you shouldn’t have to pay any customs duty because Australia and US have a free trade agreement[ELSEWHERE] I’m not familiar with local customs regulations in X COUNTRY, so this would be something you would need to find out from you local customs authority. If you like, I can provide you with a sample invoice with a breakdown of costs, if you need to show them in order to get a quote.

Post-Sale Notes
Also, a few other things to note:
  • The one AC charger (in the battery box) both powers the eMotimo and recharges the battery.
  • Try to avoid putting motor cables in and out of the ports when the TB3 is powered as it can blow the drivers.
  • Try to avoid storing the controller with anything pressing on the joystick – if left off centre it can mess up the calibration.
